Mitchell MU100CE Ukulele Review

This is a review of the Mitchell MU100CE ukulele by upcoming ukulelist and singer-songwriter Choice McKinley.

How I discover This Amazing Ukulele

“I have nothing but good things to say about this amazing ukulele! Over the course of the two years, I’ve been playing the ukulele, I’ve searched for the perfect one that I would love and would inspire me to pick it up and play.

The MU100CE is just that, an incredibly inspiring instrument! I’ve done so much research and looked at ukulele after ukulele before discovering this one at my local Guitar Center. So let’s dive right into what makes this ukulele stand out from all the others.

Mitchell Guitars has been creating quality musical instruments since 1986, yet until this year I had never heard of them. The MU100CE ukulele is their first ever Best electric ukulele.

For me, this instrument is not a beginner’s ukulele, though it could very well be someone’s first if they were willing to spend a little more before learning to play. Either way, you are definitely getting a bang for your buck!

When I first picked up this ukulele, it had a wonderful weightiness to it. It’s perfectly balanced from the body to its head, it just has this high-end feel. The MSRP is $579, but I purchased it at Guitar Center for $279.99. That alone lets you know how gracious the price is compared to the instrument itself.

The Specialty of Mitchell MU100CE Ukulele

One of my favorite things about the ukuleles from Mitchell Guitars is the fact that most of them have this really unique head. Something about the MU100CE that is so very special is the fact that it is a concert ukulele with 19 frets. Most concert ukes only have about 17 frets. The number of frets I have to work with along with body size has always been something I have been hugely picky about in my ukulele experience. I can play any sized uke, but personally, the concert is my favorite size as well as sound. The MU100CE has a very sweet beachy sound with long-lasting sustain.

Why Mitchell MU100CE Ukulele is Great

Now let’s talk the style, art, and electronics of the MU100CE. This ukulele has a very professional setup. It’s an acoustic/electric concert with a cutaway for reaching those higher notes. It features a Fisherman™ KULA preamp with a built-in tuner.

For me, this is a must-have while I’m on stage. I can make sure I’m in tune and dial in the perfect tone on the spot. The inlay pattern is made of pearl mini-dots and there are two mini-dots on the bridge as well. One of the things I knew I had to have was a ton of abalone!

The Features of Mitchell MU100CE ukulele

This uke features an abalone rosette and cream binding with an abalone purfling. Another one of my favorite features is that the binding goes all the way up the sides of the neck. It also has fret markers on the side of the neck.

Along with having 19 frets, this uke has 2 fret markers on the 12th fret, a feature that I couldn’t live without! This lets you know where your notes restart an octave higher.

Having a compensated saddle is a must-have because it aids in your strings remaining in tune as you make your journey up the fretboard. This uke has that must-have as well!

The tuners are chrome die-cast and this fine ukulele weighs two pounds. I obviously have a lot of must-haves, which another one is that my ukulele have a protective coating so when I’m rocking out on it, I’m not hurting the finish. This uke has a high natural gloss finish, giving it a beautiful look and protecting it from my hardest strumming.

Final Words

This ukulele feels like it was custom made just for me down to the last design feature. Mitchell Guitars really knows what they’re doing! I’m very happy to share my experience with this professional instrument with you. I haven’t seen any articles on this uke anywhere really, so I’m excited for you to consider purchasing this ukulele if you’re an intermediate to professional ukulele musician.

You can find the Mitchell Guitars MU100CE ukulele at Amazon, Guitar Center, Musician’s Friend, Music & Arts, and Woodwind & Brasswind. I wish you the best ukulele with your ukulele journey!”

This Mahalo soprano ukulele is a good quality entry level ukulele. It is not expensive but can compete with other expensive ukuleles.

The ukulele comes with a transparent brown color and semi-gloss finishes, which makes it even more appealing.

The bodywork and construction it very solid and the ukulele is also very portable, durable and lightweight.

The Mahalo ukulele strings & Sound

This Mahalo uke produces a rich and bright sound. Unlike other cheap ukuleles, it has a pretty good amount of volume and sustains.

In fact, it does not even sound like a cheap uke. This instrument comes with plastic strings that feel very smooth to touch. Another thing is that the sound of this ukulele can be horrible when off tune, but when tuned right, it sounds great.

It also stays in tune longer than most ukuleles in the market. Although the strings may take some time to stretch but will get better after some time.

Frets & fingerboard of MK1TBR Kahiko Series Soprano Ukulele

Frets and fretboard are a very important part of a ukulele. Therefore, in this Mahalo Soprano ukulele review, we are going to look at the fretting of the product.

The Mahalo Ukuleles MK1TBR Kahiko Series Soprano Ukulele comes with 12 brass frets, which are solidly installed on the fretboard. The fingerboard is made of a mahogany body and looks very solid for its price. The spacing of the frets on the fretboard is also done accurately.

Mahalo Ukulele tuning pegs

The machine heads of the Mahalo Ukuleles MK1TBR Kahiko Series Soprano Ukulele is made of vintage geared and nickel material.

It helps to keep the ukulele in tune for long, which is why players don’t need to tune all the time. The tuner hardware is great. It gives this ukulele a much better tone, as compared to other types of ukulele in this price range.

Wood (Neck, body and sides)

A lot of players doubt the durability of this Mahalo ukulele because of its price. Well, it’s not their fault because people always equate durability with the price. First of all, the neck of this instrument is very solid.

In fact, it doesn’t feel flimsy or gives you the impression that it might break, even if you hold it very tight. The wood of this ukulele looks too great that no one believes it is sold under $30.

In fact, the wood material looks so real and not painted. This ukulele is also rugged for schools, due to the nature of the wood and construction. It is made of thick laminate wood. The body wood of the ukulele is made of Segnon material while the fingerboard and bridge are made of mahogany.

Weight of MK1TBR Kahiko Series Soprano Ukulele

Most cheap ukuleles weight heavily, and players get tired after playing for a short time because of the weight. These ukuleles are not so bad, but ukulele with too much weight can stress the player.

The Mahalo Ukuleles MK1TBR Kahiko Series Soprano Ukulele has a lightweight, thanks to the Segnon material. It is also very portable and easy to transport.

Body & Finish of MK1TBR Kahiko Series Soprano Ukulele

The body of this ukulele is a traditional double bout in shape. The curved base is amazing and it is better than the traditional flattened off shape most ukuleles have.

This ukulele looks very attractive and mature for its price. The body doesn’t have any other decoration, with neat finishes all over. The front and back sides of this ukulele are made of single pieces while the back is completely flat. This ukulele is also very smooth to touch and it resonates very well.

Mahalo ukulele case

This ukulele is sold with a Soprano ukulele case that prevents the instrument from dust and the effect of weather. The Soprano ukulele cover is also important for people who like traveling a lot, as it products both the strings and body of the ukulele from scratches or improper handling.

Value for money

Even though this Mahalo ukulele is cheap, it still offers a good value for money. To me, I will give it a score of 9.5/10 because most people might not like to change the plastic string to something like the Aquila nylgut strings.

But overall, this ukulele is okay. It sounds well, exceptionally durable, lightweight and portable.

Summary of Mahalo Ukuleles MK1TBR Kahiko Series Soprano Ukulele features:

  • Affordable
  • Lightweight
  • Quality satin finish
  • Rich and bright sound
  • Thick laminate wood
  • Traditional double bout shape
  • Available with a soprano ukulele cover

In Summary

The Mahalo ukulele is obviously a cheap laminate ukulele, and it has no flaws or issues that normally plague the ukulele at this price point. The shape and the finish are amazing, and it also produces great sound.

This ukulele is great for beginners planning to buy their first ukuleles. It is also suitable for intermediate and advanced players that need a ukulele with a different feel.

Luna Ukulele Review – Luna Honu Mahogany Concert Ukulele

Luna hono concert ukulele

The Luna honu Concert Ukulele (or Alto Ukulele), is slightly bigger than the soprano uke. With a longer profile and a fuller tone than the soprano uke, the people who with larger hands tend to move toward this instrument.

Also, for guitar players making their mind divert to the Ukulele, is a little easier access to the upper fret registry. As a beginner, anyone can expect great playability and quality sound with this uke. It’s an excellent selection for pros, beginners or children.

Behind our acoustic guitar line, Luna Guitars has modeled the encouragement, and the result is now world-recognized Luna Honu Mahogany Concert Ukulele. Since 2005 Luna has been manufacturing guitars and there are some guitar companies who started and headed by a woman, Yvonne de Villiers. Luna Honu Mahogany Concert Ukulele is the best ukulele of the luna brand.

Anyway, I have come across several luna ukulele reviews and it seems to me like myself and other players are saying almost the same thing about the brand.

Specifications of Luna Honu Mahogany Concert Ukulele

[wptb id=502]

Before I proceed to show you some features of the Luna Concert ukulele that really attracted me, let me share with you some facts about the design and shape of the Luna uke.

Design and shape of the Luna Honu Mahogany Concert Ukulele

Even as you sit by the seaside to enjoy the rhythmic sound of your precious ukulele with your friends or loved ones, you still want them to appreciate the beauty of your ukulele. Unlike other Concert ukuleles, the Luna Honu Concert ukulele’s design and shape make it irresistible.

In fact, it is a perfect representation of the traditional Hawaiian body ornamentation, with monochromatic designs, tattooed in black ink color against the brown skin.

There is more to the design, but I will like to show you the most important feature. What about the shape of this ukulele? Yes, the Luna uke is guitar shaped.

So, if you like to seat and hold your ukulele like a classical guitar, this shape will make more sense. In this position, the guitar shaped ukulele will “lock-in” better than other shapes of a ukulele. Well, different players may have their own opinion but from experience, this is the best for newbies.

Are there any other unique features of this ukulele brand?

Oh yes, I can’t forget to tell you my experience with other features like the body, bag, and fretboard of this ukulele. I will share with you what I found out about each of them. Let’s get to business.

Body of Luna Honu Mahogany Concert Ukulele

Everybody wants to buy a product that is durable. In fact, the quality of your ukulele’s body matters a lot. That’s why you must check carefully to see the type of material used to construct its body

Apart from its durability, the quality of sound produced by your ukulele brand is also determined by the quality of the material used for constructing the product.

That is why you must choose your material carefully. However, the back, top, sides and neck of the luna concert ukulele is made of a solid mahogany material which is known to produce great sound when used for constructing ukulele.

However, if you check other luna guitar’s review, you will see a lot of positive comments about mahogany wood. It doesn’t crack like other wood and it resonates well.

Luna Honu Mahogany Concert Ukulele bag

Okay, I know someone would laugh at this but it is obviously part of the reason my own luna ukulele lasted for quite a long time. You see, although I was always careful but I wasn’t always there to protect my ukulele but the bag did it for me.

Well, the good thing about this is that I didn’t have to pay an extra to get the bag it came with the product just like that.

However, everyone needs a Concert ukulele case and I must say this Luna ukulele case was amazing. It is made of quality fabric material that is stiff enough to protect the ukulele.

In fact, this Concert ukulele cover is priceless I must say. If you consider the Luna ukulele price, you will wonder while the product still comes with a cover.

Also, if you are thinking of traveling with your ukulele always, then you have nothing to worry about. This brand of the ukulele is very easy to transport because of its lightweight. Your gig back can also be used to carry your ukulele conveniently.

The fretboard of Luna Honu Tatto Concert Ukulele

Topping the neck is a washy rosewood fingerboard of marvelous quality. Amazing for strumming and playing chords.

Throughout the years I played this ukulele, I notice that the sound quality it produces is always consistent. I was thinking a different thing until I did research and found out some unique features about the material “rosewood.”

Ukuleles that are made of rosewood fretboards always deliver great sound. So, since the luna honu mahogany ukulele is made of similar material, your guess is as good as mine.

Pros and Cons of the Luna Honu Mahogany Concert Ukulele

  • Lightweight
  • Comes with a bag
  • Rosewood fretboard and bridge
  • Solid mahogany wood used for constructing top, neck, body and sides.

Cons

  • Available in its natural brown color, may not suit people looking for other ukulele colors.

Lohanu has everything; technology, manpower and experience to become a global leader in the ukulele making business. They are well-known to offer a number of top quality budget ukuleles that have received more positive ukulele reviews than many brands on the market.

The name “Lohanu” is made of a combination of three words; love, ohana and lastly, unity. And the company has lived up to its name, satisfying the needs of players at all levels.

In this soprano ukulele review, we shall be accessing the soprano ukulele made by Lohanu. We shall look at features like playability, fretboard, size & sound, wood & finish, and how these things benefit the player.

We shall also look at the pros and cons of this soprano ukulele.

1.Lohanu (LU-S) Ukulele Review

Playability

The Lohanu LU-S has an excellent playability, which is surprising for a ukulele at this price point. The neck is straight and solidly attached to the body.

Though the tone wood used for its neck is not the best of wood, the smooth finish on it makes the fingers to navigate up and down the fretboard with ease.

The bundle also comes with everything beginners need to get started immediately.

The strap buttons are already fixed, so you will not be spending extra money on that.

Above all, this ukulele has a very lightweight. It weighs just 1 pound making it less tiring to carry for extended periods. The strap and balanced weight also makes it comfortable for beginners to practice with for many hours.

Even without the strap, you can comfortably play it while standing for extended periods.

Fretboard & Neck

The LU-S has a rosewood fretboard, which enables it to deliver a phenomenal sound.

Rosewood has an excellent ability to tame unwanted over tone, thus making the ukulele sound bright and clearer.

The 12 frets are placed neatly on the fretboard. They are all of the same height, giving no room for the ukulele to buzz.

Size & Sound

The LU-S is 21 inches long which is the normal soprano size. As with other soprano ukuleles, players with smaller fingers will find playing this ukulele very comfortable.

It has a shorter neck, so players won’t be doing too much stretching while playing.

The sound is bright and clear, though it does not have better resonance than a solid wood ukulele.

However, considering the price point, there would be difficulty in finding a better sounding ukulele than the LU-S.

Most budget ukuleles, on the other hand, either has fretting problems or other discouraging irregularities.

They are not given much attention to details because manufacturers are seeking to cover up their expenses by increasing production.

However, Lohanu has good quality control policy in place, which allows the company to check all ukuleles properly before shipping them out.

Wood & Finish

Being a laminate ukulele, the LU-S still has some advantages over solid wood ukuleles.

It is not fragile and susceptible to damages caused by changes in humidity and temperature, which often affect a solid wood ukulele.

Laminate wood will not resonate better than solid wood but it does make this ukulele last longer, so having laminate at this price point is not a deal breaker.

It is well-made, portable and comfortable to carry for extended periods because of its lightweight.

The solid ABS binding is handmade and neatly applied, thus making the ukulele look more appealing.

Pros

  • Arched back for richer sound and volume
  • Bundle includes; extra strings, digital tuner, gig bag, and strap which are handy for the beginner
  • Reasonably priced
  • Great build quality
  • Tone is balanced across the range

Cons

  • It is not made for high-end use
  • Low-quality gig bag which doesn’t protect the instrument completely
  • Requires proper setup on arrival for optimum performance
  • Not the prettiest of ukulele at this price point

Lohanu (LU-C) Review

Playability

The Luhanu (LU-C) ukulele is 24 inches long. It is 3 inches longer than the soprano ukulele, with wider spaced frets, giving more room for players with bigger fingers and hand sizes to navigate on the fretboard.

Its superior Aquila nylgut strings also make strumming enjoyable. They are smooth on the fingers, and beginners who like playing hard will find it very interesting.

Getting this ukulele to stay in tune is a breeze. It comes with superior chrome die-cast tuner gears which are comfortable to use and holds tune well enough.

Fretboard & Neck

Unlike other budget concert ukuleles at this price point, the LU-C has a smooth neck that will not obstruct finger movement when fretting.

This feature distinguishes the Lohanu’s budget ukuleles from others at this price point.

The frets of the LU-C are perfectly seated on the fretboard; there is no overhanging frets or rough edges.

Lohanu shows class in the area of fretwork that is why their budget ukuleles do not buzz like others at this price point.

Size & sound

The strings, rosewood fretboard and arched back of this ukulele, combine to give a warm, bright and clear sound with more volume. And though it is an all-laminate uke with poor resonance, it is comfortable for practice.

The LU-C is 24 inches long and has wider fret spacing. It also has more tension on the strings than the soprano ukulele.

Wood & finish

Being an all laminate ukulele, the LU-C is light and still very sturdy. It is an attractive ukulele with a light finish that makes it to even resonant better than other laminate ukuleles at this price point.

With a weight of 1.2 pounds, the LU-C makes a great travel ukulele. One can even play it for extended periods without the strap because of the lightweight.

Pros

  • Superior Aquila strings
  • Excellent playability
  • Great tone and intonation
  • Sound is warm and bright with no buzzing noises
  • Bundles come with extra strings, strap, bag, strap pins installed, picks, & free video lessons for beginners

Cons

  • Action is a bit high for our taste but can be adjusted
  • It is an all-laminate ukulele
  • Might require some minor setup on arrival

What users are saying about the Lohuna (LU-C)

This Lohanu concert ukulele is a wise buy considering the quality of its hardware, playability, and sound. The bundle includes everything beginners need to get started, so no need to shop for extra accessories to get started.

It is surprisingly durable and suitable for beginners on a budget, looking to upgrade from the soprano ukulele size.

Does Lohanu offer the Best Tenor Ukulele for Beginners? Find out!

Moving away from the Lohanu concert ukulele, the next is the tenor ukulele review. We will also look at the fretboard, size & sound, wood & finish and how they benefit players.

We will also look at important features like the pros and cons which will help you to make an informed decision.

3.Lohanu Tenor Ukulele Review

Playability

The Lohanu (LU-T) tenor ukulele is bigger in size than the soprano and concert ukulele. Fret spacing is wider, making it even more comfortable for adults with larger hands.

The wider fret spacing coupled with a smooth action makes it more comfortable to play. Players don’t need to press too hard on the strings to touch the frets.

Fretboard & Neck

The LU-T has rosewood fretboard, which is a great tone wood. Rosewood has the ability to tame unwanted overtone, giving the ukulele a bright and clear tone.

The neck is solidly attached to the body, so well that you can grip the ukulele tight without fear of tearing it apart.

All the frets seat properly on the fretboard and do not produce any buzzing sound like other budget ukuleles.

Lohanu takes pride in producing quality budget ukuleles to meet the needs of every beginner. They have great quality control and ensure all their ukuleles are well finished with no irregularities or shortcomings.

Size & sound

The LU-T is 21 inches long. It has more fret spacing than the soprano and tenor ukulele, making it easier for beginners with bigger fingers to chord.

Players with larger fingers will also enjoy strumming or fingerpicking with this ukulele.

The sound is a deeper and louder. It does not buzz like other inexpensive ukulele and the notes ring out well during robust strumming.

Wood & finish

This is also an all-laminate ukulele. Though the resonance is also poor due to the nature of the wood, it is a fair deal considering the price point.

The finish is also light and very attractive. It completely protects the ukulele body and gives it a natural look.

Lohanu did a great job on the workmanship of this ukulele. It has a solid construction and neatly done ABS binding.

Pros

  • Excellent workmanship
  • Better fret spacing for adults with larger hands
  • Good padded & sturdy bag
  • The bundle has extra strings, free video lessons, picks, digital tuners, strap, & pick holder.

Learning How to Play Simple Ukulele Chords: A Beginner Guide

These simple ukulele chords are what beginner should know. In this article, I will introduce you to the simple ukulele chords, how to play the major chords, minor chords, and the 7th chord. So read on!

Where Do I Start From?

First, make sure you already have the best ukulele for beginners. Learning chords with a poor quality instrument that cannot hold tune well can be very frustrating.

Secondly, you need to tune the ukulele properly. The chords and notes will sound horribly bad if the ukulele is not in tune. You can get an electronic tuner if you can’t tune manually.

Questions to ask as a beginner before learning ukulele chords

It will be out of place to stop halfway down the line when you start learning how to play chords. These 7 chords we are talking about are quite easy but finding answers to those mind bugging questions can help you stay focused.

  • Will the chords difficult or challenging for you to learn?
  • Are you really learning chords that will benefit you?
  • Can sing and play the ukulele at the same time after learning chords?

How to Play Major Chords

The painful fingers, difficult chord diagrams, all is worth it as long as learning how to play the ukulele is concerned. These are sacrifices you need to make and the end result is always amazing.

Let’s assume you have your ukulele tuned properly already. Now, we are going to learn how to play the major chords.

The seven major chords are the A B C D E F G, the first seven letters of the alphabet. However, the essential ones are the A C D E F G. Comparing what we have now with what we wrote before, you can see that the only chord missing is the B.

Remember we said earlier that the B chord is not that easy for beginners to play. It is not also needed that much compared to the others.

How to Play Minor Chords

We are going to elaborate on this a little. First, let’s assume you now know how to play the major chords that sound stronger.

The minor chords produce softer sounds and can also spice up the tune with some moody sound.

First minor chords:

  • Am
  • Bm
  • Cm
  • Dm

Among these four chords listed above, the Am chord is the simplest. The reason is because you only need one finger for it.

Your middle finger should be on the G string (second fret). You can use four fingers for the Bm, or a barre chord.

For the Cm chord, you need to move down a fret and make use of either a barre chord on the C, E and A strings or just use your three fingers. For the Dm chord, add your ring finger to the C string.

Let’s look at the four chords we mentioned and others we didn’t.

How to Play the 7th Chords

This is one of the common chords in jazz and blues songs. They add a kind of groovy vibe to the music making it livelier.

One interesting thing about this chord is that they are easy to learn and play. We have the A7, B7, C7 and D7.

For the A7, your first finger should be used on the first fret of the C string. While for the B7 chord, make use of the barre chord on the strings G, C and E on the second fret, then your middle finger should be on the C string third fret.

For the C7, your first finger should be on the first fret of the A string. The next is the D7, which is similar to the B7.

On the second fret, you will make use of another barre chord on G, C and E strings.

Let’s look at the four chords we mentioned and others we didn’t.

Tips for beginners

Before you start learning the ukulele, read the following tips:

  • Get a good quality ukulele. The ukulele should be able to hold tune well and sound well too.
  • Ensure that your instrument is properly tuned.
  • Do not rush things, take your time and practice consistently.

Final Word

These chords are very simple chords that every ukulele player should know. You can play a wide range of songs if you know them and remember also that you can transpose any song to another key to make it a lot easier to play.

Fretboard of the Kala Ka 15S Mahogany Soprano Ukulele

Before you buy any ukulele, check the material used in constructing the fretboard of the product. When it comes to quality wood material for fretboard making, rosewood fretboards are considered as the best wood material for constructing ukuleles.

This is because the wood material is naturally oily, and produces a richer fundamental tone than other types of wood material. Un-wanted overtone is also being absorbed into the oily pores of the wood and that is why ukuleles with rosewood fretboards always deliver the best sound.

The fretboard of the Kala Ka 15S Mahogany Soprano Ukulele is made of rosewood material. In fact, I don’t think I have played ukulele that produces a great sound like this Kala Ka 15S. The tone delivered by the Kala Ka 15S is rich with a less high-end attack.

How To Tune A Ukulele : A Guide For Beginners

As a beginner, one of the things you will learn about the ukulele is how to tune it. Tuning is one of the difficult challenges many beginners encounter. Of course, it is only a well-tuned instrument that will sound well.

We have prepared a simple, step-by-step guide on how you can tune a ukulele to the standard tuning, the various types of ukulele and how to tune them, using tuners, tuning apps and more.

How Beginners can tune a ukulele

Tuning a string instrument is not a big deal. Even though you are new to playing the instrument, you can still tune. There are videos on how to tune a ukulele or other stringed instruments. You can learn from these videos or from the texts we are going to provide here for you.

Standard Tuning: How it is been done

The ukulele was also tuned to G, C, E, and A notes. But this only become known and accepted as the standard when the internet was invented.

The ukulele was also tuned to G, C, E, and A notes. But this only become known and accepted as the standard when the internet was invented.

Tuning The Ukulele With A Piano

Most videos you will find today use the standard ukulele tuning pattern, G4, C4, E4, A4. The 4 that comes after the letters represents the piano octave you will also find.

You can easily tune the ukulele when you are using a reference instrument. It is quite easy because the instrument will guide you. If you have a piano, then you can follow these steps to tune your ukulele.

1.First, play the G on your piano then strike the G string with your finger. Adjust the pitch of the G string to suit that of the piano.

  1. If you decide to tune the rest of the ukulele using the piano, then continue by first playing the C, E and A first on your piano before the ukulele. With this process, you can tune your ukulele to sound right.

Tuning Your Ukulele With A Tuner

Another great way to tune the ukulele is with a tuner. Most players use the chromatic tuner and it works best for them. A Korg chromatic tuner is a great option.

Where to buy a chromatic tuner

You can buy chromatic tuners online at a fair price. Do not forget that there are different brands of tuners on the market and all are not chromatic.

Meaning of Chromatic tuners

This is a common question I get asked by beginners most of the time. The thing is a chromatic tuner is designed to help you get all of your notes tuned. For instance, guitar tuners are not chromatic.

Tuning The Ukulele By Ear

If you don’t have any tools, gadgets or friends with instruments to help you tune your ukulele, you can still tune your ukulele. It may not be as perfect as using a piano or any other tool, but it is doable.

You can tune the ukulele yourself by listening with your ear. You listen to the sound and then adjust the instrument to sound right.

Let’s discuss it step-by-step;

  1. Play the C string and listen to how it sounds. If the sound is sharp or flat, go ahead and adjust the tuners.
  2. Play the 4th fret of the C string, which is E. The sound of E should not be different from the open string. But if the open string and the fretted one are not the same, then you need to adjust the open string a bit.
  3. Repeat the second step, but this time with the 3rd fret of the E string or G note. Ensure that it matches with the open G string then adjust.
  4. Now play the 2nd fret on G string or A note. It should have the same sound as an open A string. Make sure that this and the fretted note are in the same tune.

Tuning by listening with your ear is not as complicated as many think. You need to practice to be able to get your ear accustomed to the different tones.

How long will a beginner take to learn the ukulele?

To be honest, this question does not have a direct answer. But one thing is certain, learning any musical instrument is a lifetime journey, and not the way people graduate from high school.

In fact, you don’t graduate from it; you learn every now and then to get better and better. So buckle up and enjoy the ride.

However, if you ask me how long it takes for dummies to learn to play the ukulele, I would say “5 minutes.” But it depends if the sound you will be making in that 5 minutes would make sense or not. Obviously not!

There is no short cut to success but if you do things right, the reward will reflect in your performances. Now let’s look at some few tips to help you learn a little bit faster.

Learning the Ukulele basics

It does not take long for you to learn the basics. Let’s assume you have the best ukulele for beginners, which we said does not necessarily mean an expensive uke.

There are great beginner ukuleles you can find without breaking the bank or going broke. I usually advise beginners not to spend too much to buy their first ukulele.

As you advance in playing the ukulele, you may decide to go for highly priced models.

Now back to learning the basics. Like we said, it doesn’t take long to learn the ukulele. 5 minutes is enough to do so. You will learn about the different parts of the ukulele, how to tune the ukulele, chord formation, and strumming.

In fact, the last two things I mentioned here are the two main things you need to know or learn to play the ukulele.

What Hinders Beginners from Learning How To Play Ukulele

I spoke with a great ukulele teacher, Mr. Peter, on the most difficult aspect of being a teacher and the hardest things new students face.

Their challenges may not be the same but almost similar if you ask me. I was once a student so I have firsthand experience on what new students go through.

According to Mr. Peter, he said, one of the most challenging parts of being a teacher is when you come across new students who can’t narrow down what they really want to learn in playing the ukulele.

There are many things about the ukulele students can learn to play but not being direct about it would make it even difficult for the teacher to help.

He said, sometimes, some newbie who know what they want will walk up to him, and ask him to teach them ‘Flake’ by Jackson Johnson.

Of course, that’s very simple and direct he already knows what they want and what to teach them.

On the other hand, a student can walk up to the teacher and say “I am interested in learning the ukulele.” That’s a great idea but when asked what exactly he or she wants to learn, the student says “I really don’t know.”

The teacher needs to know what you really want to learn to play on the ukulele. Not having any clue will not be helpful in any way. The teacher needs to know the reason you decided to play the ukulele and not other instruments.

Of course, we have other instruments like the guitar, saxophone, mandolin and the rest. So what really about the ukulele grabbed your attention? Or what particular song do you like? This will help the teacher decide what he or she would be teaching you.

Learning To Play The Ukulele – How The Music Teacher Can Assist You

If you listen to different musicians play, you will discover that majority of them uses different playing techniques. Is strumming the thing about the ukulele that really perked your ears when you first made attempt to learn the instrument or the fingerstyle of a player?

Are you fascinated by the chord forms? Or is the person inspiring you to play someone who uses simple chords or complex chords? Or is he or she just a lead player?

As simple as these questions are, they can help the teacher not to not only teach you how to play the ukulele but rate your success level.

The teacher will be able to get you to the point where you can play the ukulele comfortably and be proud of yourself. Individuals differ in the way they learn and adapt to new things.

What you may learn in 1 week, others might take 4 weeks to learn that same thing. Knowing what you want to learn, an experienced teacher can help you achieve your goals easily.

There are people who took years of music lessons but became disappointed because, at the end of the day, they never could play what they wanted. Many of us who are professional players today had the same experience.

In fact, being unable to play the things you wanted to play can make you give up or lose interest in playing the ukulele.

Final Word

The answer to the question “how long will a beginner take to learn the ukulele?” depends on what the person in question really wants to achieve.

If you only want to strum few songs, then you don’t need much time, but if you want to play like the famous Jake Shimabukuro, then you are going to need more time and consistent practice.

And remember, learning the ukulele is a lifelong thing. The day you stop learning or practicing, you stop progressing.
